The Making of 'Black Memory' by Mohamed Lamine Boualita

Many times, huge tragedies in human history inspired artists, from all over the world and from several fields, to express what they saw or even their feelings through their art. Mohamed Lamine Boualita, an Algerian 3D artist, who aims to create storytelling images outside his daily architectural visualization workflow, has recently presented this emotional image and today he shows us how he arrived at this result step by step. Enjoy the article!

About Me.

Hello 3D Community!

My name is Mohamed Lamine Boualita, and I'm a computer graphics artist from Algeria with 9 years of experience. According to my education, I'm a computer Architectural designer. However, I make visualizations of interior and exterior spaces. I would like to share with you a brief article for one of my creative works.

About The Project.

Before starting to talk about the project, I would encourage you to watch this 15-minute timelapse, the music is relaxed and the process enjoyable, at least for me :)

I hope you've enjoyed the video for my non-commercial project. The name of the project is "Black Memory" and it simulates the memory of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria at the beginning of 2023 it is focused on the city of Aleppo in Syria because it suffered from both war and earthquake at the same time. I was inspired to create it by what I accidentally found on the Web. I was negatively impressed by the effects of the destruction and the sad images that were left behind attracted my attention. I wanted to simulate them in an artistic way that honestly expresses the magnitude of the suffering experienced by the victims of the earthquake and the war in the city of Aleppo.

Software Used.

The main tools I used on this project are 3DS Max, ZBrush, V-Ray Renderer and Adobe Photoshop for post-production work.

References.

Keeping good reference images close to you during the whole design process is something that I would definitely recommend to you. Below are the references I collected to materialize this project.

Modeling.

First of all I simulated the reference image of the seated man which represents the central element of the Work in Zbrush Software. After that, I searched for several 3d models such as ready-made demolished buildings. I found them in Evermotion Collection Archmodel 165, and in order to keep the file small I used the proxy method which reduced the number of polygons from 30 million to 500.000, and it was finally much easier for me to complete my work.

Materials.

Most of the elements of the work are ready-made blocks, their raw materials are ready, except for the materials of the sitting man and the floor, as shown in the print screens below:
