Cesium - enabling real world 3D data in O3DE

Cesium for O3DE announced an open-source plugin that enables real-world 3D data in Open 3D Engine (O3DE), allowing developers to create full-scale and high-accuracy global simulations.

O3DE is an open-source, real-time 3D engine designed for great 3D experiences, games, and simulations. O3DE is the successor to Lumberyard, Amazon's AAA-capable game engine, and was fully open-sourced through their collaboration with The Linux Foundation under an Apache 2.0 license.

Some of the features of Cesium's plugin are:

  • Full-scale & high-accuracy WGS84 globe for O3DE.
  • A runtime 3D Tiles engine, with level-of-detail selection and caching, to stream massive 3D geospatial datasets (terrain, imagery, photogrammetry, and 3D cities) from the cloud, a private network, or a local machine.
  • Integration with the O3DE Script Canvas including support for double-precision math APIs for precision.
  • Integrated with the Cesium ion cloud services for access to curated 3D geospatial content.

Cesium started in 2011 when a team of developers at the software company Analytical Graphics, Inc. set out to create an application to visualize objects in space. Patrick Cozzi, a computer graphics expert, led the project to produce the world's most accurate, performant, and time-dynamic virtual globe. Dubbed "Cesium" after the element that makes atomic clocks famously accurate, it was released as open-source in 2012. In 2019, Cesium became an independent company and today provides an exceptional open platform. Offering a mix of open-source and commercially available software, the Cesium platform is a complete suite of tools for building 3D geospatial applications.
